The purchase of used instruments
Used pianos are nowadays available like "sand on a beach". Often given free away or at a symbolic price.
Old, new, overdamper, underdamper, big, small, black, white, filthy or hygenical clean and so on, but which one is right for me or my daughter that wants to start? Is the instrument really all right? Is the price justified? Does it hide major defects or other undesirable oddities behind its polished panels like those here in this gallery?
Who do you ask for advice? Her piano teacher, a pianist or a fellow piano player? Teachers and pianists can certainly judge tone and playability of the instruments well. They also find themselves with a little of piano technique, they may even discover worse damage to the soundboard or highly rehearsed hard hammers. But what about the tunability? What does it mean, if sometimes even new tuning pins do not provide sufficiant torque enough to hold pitch? Is the soundboard really all right - does it conceals a hairline crack? Did tiny crawly creatures previously enjoyed the pure woolen mechanic felts and is there the possibility that mechanic axles and pins are oxidized so that things can get stuck? A reliable opinion can only be given by an experienced professional. Get the security of your buying decisions with our piano specialist expertise!
